Biography
Professor Ahmad obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from Punjab University, Pakistan, in 1984, followed by a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Punjab University, Pakistan, in 1987. He subsequently became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), UK, in 1996 and completed his specialist training in the United Kingdom, receiving the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in 2002. Professor Ahmad was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) by the University of Liverpool, UK, in 2004 and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), UK, in 2009. He also obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching (PG Cert Teaching) from Edge Hill University, UK, in 2009 and a Postgraduate Certificate in Management (PG Cert Management) from The Open University, UK, in 2010.
Professor Ahmad has held numerous senior leadership, educational, and clinical roles throughout his distinguished career. He served as Clinical Director at Royal Liverpool University Hospital from 2007 to 2012, Sub-Dean for Medical Undergraduate Studies at the University of Liverpool from 2008 to 2017, North Coast Strategic Clinical Network Lead for Diabetes at NHS England from 2013 to 2018, and Diabetes Lead for the Advanced Quality Alliance (AQuA), North West, United Kingdom, from 2014 to 2018. Professor Ahmad has received multiple Clinical Excellence Awards from the Department of Health, United Kingdom, between 2004 and 2018. He was also part of the teams that received the Royal Liverpool Hospital Team of the Year Awards in 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2012 and was a finalist for the Northwest Leadership Award in 2010.
Prior to joining Imperial College London Diabetes & Endocrine Centre (ICLDEC), Professor Ahmad served as Consultant Physician at Royal Liverpool University Teaching Hospital, United Kingdom, from 2004 to 2018.
Scope of Practice
Professor Ahmad’s scope of practice includes the diagnosis and management of all types of diabetes, including Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, cardiorenal metabolic syndrome, Type 3 diabetes, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). His scope of practice also includes obesity and obesity-related complications, osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, thyroid and parathyroid disorders including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, resistant thyroid syndrome and hyperparathyroidism, pituitary disorders including hyperprolactinaemia and Cushing’s disease, adrenal disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes and endocrine genetic disorders including genetic testing, management of patients before and after bariatric surgery, and telehealth consultations.
