Imperial Diabetes Educator Training Course

The Imperial Diabetes Educator Training course at Imperial College London Diabetes & Endocrine Centre (ICLDEC) is a multi-disciplinary course to develop students for work as health professionals in the area of diabetes education and management. IDET is one of just few courses in the UAE that has this status.

The course is held in partnership with Imperial College London and includes case seminars and clinical training on chronic disease self-management education, applied biological and behavioural sciences, principles of teaching and learning and best practice management of diabetes. Studies will be complemented with cases of clinical attachment with ICLDEC physicians, dietitians and educators. This will equip students to provide competent diabetes related clinical care.

It is open to nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and other healthcare workers with a current license to practice. Graduates will be eligible to be licensed as Health Educators by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH).

Registration for 2026 will open in September 2025.

IDET Course is scheduled to start in January 2026.

Entry Requirements

Before the course start date all applicants must have

A recognised bachelor’s degree in nursing or healthcare related field (e.g Dietetics, pharmacy) or an equivalent qualification
Proof of English language proficiency (Minimum grade in Academic IETLS ≥5.0 overall or equivalent)
UAE healthcare professional license (HAAD now Department of Health of Abu Dhabi, MOHAP or DHA)
Interviews are scheduled after submission of requirements.

Assessment

Various Assessments are conducted throughout the course to ensure all the aspects discussed in theory and reinforced in practical sessions have been clearly understood and applied.

Students are assessed through a combination of clinical, case-based assessments, oral and written examinations.

To successfully complete the course, students are required to achieve an overall pass rate of 60%.

Successful graduates will have a certificate from the Imperial College London Diabetes & Endocrine Centre in collaboration with Fatima College of Health Sciences.

The course will have three components:

Academic: by theory modules and case-based learning
Clinical: by practical experience in number of clinical environments
Practical: by attending workshops on important aspects of diabetes education, including monitoring, and insulin injection devices and communication skills

Attendance:

Monday and Wednesday evenings

Academic and practical sessions are scheduled twice a week, on Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Extra sessions may be introduced at the discretion of the course faculty or Programme Director.

Clinical Attachment hours

In addition to the Wednesday sessions students are required to complete the clinical attachment which will take place during regular working hours. The course coordinator will help to facilitate this based on an individual students availability.

Learning support:

Every student will be given full support throughout the course and will be assigned an academic and clinical supervisor who will monitor progress.
